about

"A modal vision drowns" is an anagram of
my name (David Warin Solomons).
After recently being kindly reminded of this fact,
I decided to write a piece with this as the title,
for flute and string quartet.

The composition actually started with the second section
(Dorian mode being my favourite mode)
I then added an introduction in Ionian (major key)
and continued after the Dorian with Locrian
and an "altered mode" which starts with 2 semitones,
and ends in an augmented second (D#EFGABC)
I have not found an official name for this mode
- some have suggested Phrygian with extraneous sharpened seventh
others say Dorian with raised first step, I thought of augmented superlocrian, but, in the end, I opted for "altered mode".

The work then "decomposes" two bars at a time in various modes
ending back in Ionian.
