about

This quartet is based on the traditional German folk song "Auf de schwäb'sche Eisebahne" (on the Swabian railway). The steam train starts out from the station after a few whistles and the quartet goes through various speeding up, slowing down and key changes. Near the end the tune becomes a slow waltz before retuning to a reprise of the original musical idea, some final whistles and the train gently enters its next station.
