The face of love
tender and perilous
came to me at dusk
after a livelong day.
It could have been an archer
with his bow
or else a harpist
with his harp.
I cannot tell
cannot recall.
All that I know
he pierced me
with a shaft
or with a song.
All that I know
he pierced me
to my heart
straight and forever.
Unbearable burning
wound of love.

"Was bleibt aber stiften die Dichter."
[Marie Keyser]
It stands by the sleepy river
But the bending willow would touch the water with its very top
The church an old church tells the hours from the island where the night descends
I can still see it, its grey roof in the grey of the water
I have a presentiment in the tower of wood, of my dwelling place, of madness, of silence
Closed in, closed in but keeping watch
Oh never change what remains and should remain
Was bleibt aber stiften die Dichter.....
"What remains, however, is the stuff of poetry"

Say it in words and you cheat
you cheat the indefinable
you cheat your beloved
you cheat yourself
and it disappears
your beloved becomes as nothing
for you have confined her
to the words you speak
for thought is not reached
and it disappears
you have spoken yourself
into the temporal
which cheats love
It cannot uphold it
and it disappears
do not speak of love
do not speak my love
lest it disappear!

Hear the message of Christmas time
Today is born the King of Kings
With glory hidden in a stable
For poor and humble are most able
To see in him the King of Kings
Hear the message of Christmas time
Today is born the Son of Man
With human flesh and pain and woe
Like one of us so we might know
That Jesus is the Son of Man
Hear the message of Christmas time
Today is born the Son of God
Who from his Father up above
came down to give us peace and love
Then sinless died the Son of God
Hear the message of Christmas time
Today is born the Word of God
To human flesh the Word became
Yet was and is and will be the same
For evermore the Word of God
Hear the message of Christmas time
Today is born the Light of Truth
Without it we are lost and stray from goodness
For Christ is the way, the only way
The Light of Truth
Hear the message of Christmas time
Today was born the King of Kings
And glory shone from that poor stable
So poor and humble are most able
To see in him the King of Kings.
